Allis Chalmers HD 21P Dozer 3D Progress

by | Nov 23, 2024

As with any career or sport, the practitioner has to keep exercising his or her skills to stay sharp. Here I am taking the challenge of modeling this Allis Chalmers HD 21P Dozer in 3D and making it functional with high-quality details. What I mean with functional is that the parts will move and work as in real life.

Blender is an impressive and powerful workhorse that provides a multitude of options for the workflow of rigging the character, creatures and vehicles as evident on the film in production. I have multiple projects that are in the “for fun” category and will try to finish each on its time. This is the first one I “retake” after my nasty divorce. But it is one I have been dreaming about because I love Dozers. I used to play around construction sites in my neighborhood as a child and got to ride on some impressive ones back in the day. I laugh about the comforts on current models compared to old models like this one.

Rigging a 3D HD 21P Dozer – One process

Rigging a vehicle is a different process than rigging a humanoid character or a creature with 3, 4, or more legs. While rigging usually does not start until the entire modeling happens, one needs to keep the rigging process in mind to model correctly towards it.

The tracks are particularly tedious, but with automation processes the time to get them rigged is shortened. I have only rigged one set before for this one will be a challenge as it is more complex. I am including here an image from the internet for your benefit. Please visit the source to support their efforts.

Screenshots of the Progress

Modeling the HD 21P Dozer in Blender, texturing it with Krita and editing videos with Kdenlive.

The photos where the tracks are blue color are old. Back in around 2021 or 2022 when I started this exercise I had some fascination with this view port “view.” And I am retaking this project where I left it.

The difference now is that I bought the shop manual for the tractor so I will be editing and fixing things that I made using “creative freedom” as it is called when you “make up” what you don’t know about something. As I edit and remake old part, and create the new ones I will be updating this project for your enjoyment. Remember to come back every so often to check it out, or better yet, subscribe to the studio’s newsletter to know when updates are made.

As I record screengraps of the evolutioning process of the modeling and riggin of the HD 21P Dozer, I will post here.
